Nitrogen (N) Deficiency:

Phosphorus (P) Deficiency:

  • Symptoms: stunted overall growth, including smaller leaves and shorter stems. Leaves may develop a dull or purplish discoloration, sometimes with a bronze or reddish tinge on the undersides.

Potassium (K) Deficiency:

  • Symptoms: The edges and tips of leaves turn brown and begin to scorch or burn. Yellowing may occur between the veins of older leaves, with the edges eventually drying out and crumbling. In severe cases, leaves may drop prematurely.

Magnesium (Mg) Deficiency:

  • Symptoms: Yellowing that starts between the veins of older leaves, progressing towards the center of the leaf. The veins may remain green for a while, giving the leaves a marbled appearance. As the deficiency worsens, the yellow areas turn brown and may become necrotic (dead tissue).

Iron (Fe) Deficiency:

  • Symptoms: New leaves develop a pale yellow or chlorotic appearance, while veins may stay green. This is most common in evergreens grown in alkaline soils where iron becomes unavailable to the plant.

Manganese (Mn) Deficiency:

  • Symptoms: Similar to iron deficiency, with yellowing or chlorosis appearing between the veins of younger leaves, while veins remain green. Leaves may also develop brown speckles or stippling.pen_spark

Encouraging Blooms:

  • Fertilization: Use a fertilizer formulated for flowering plants. Look for a fertilizer with a higher ratio of phosphorus (P) to nitrogen (N). Phosphorus helps promote flower bud formation. Apply fertilizer according to the package instructions, avoiding over-fertilization.
  • Deadheading: Regularly deadhead spent flowers. This means removing the flower head after it has bloomed. This encourages the plant to put its energy into producing new flowers instead of setting seed.
  • Potash Boost: A light application of potash (potassium) in late summer or early fall can also help promote flower bud development for the following spring. You can use a fertilizer high in potassium (K) or a product like potassium sulfate.
